Isn’t all concrete the same? Well, you can order the same concrete, but what makes it different is a little more complex than that. The first key to a long lasting concrete slab is subgrade. A level, compacted subgrade is necessary for a solid base, and uniformity in the slab.

Second is reinforcement. Rebar, wire mesh, fiber mesh, or none at all. Each has its place. Having a contractor that understands this, and can explain it to you assures you that your slab is designed to last as long as possible.

Finally, water-cement ratios. I don’t want to get to technical, but the easy way to explain it is the more water, the weaker the concrete. Did you know that many contractors use water as a finishing aid? When applied to the surface, this water changes the water-cement ratio of your concrete to dangerous levels in the top ¼”. This is a main cause for spalling, scaling, and discoloration.
